Government to legislate against use of credit cards for online gambling

The Albanese government has announced it will legislate against allowing people to use credit cards when gambling online, with a bill proposing the law is expected to enter Parliament later this year.

The government plans to consult industry groups and stakeholders on how to implement the ban.

The ban on credit cards was a proposal from a 2021 parliamentary committee inquiry which looked at the regulation of the currency being used for online gambling.

The report found while credit card usage for online gambling is low – the harm caused has the potential to be significant and life changing.
