Student health insurance in the Netherlands
In the Netherlands, you must have health insurance to cover any medical costs that may occur during your stay here. How you should do it depends on your nationality and whether or not you have a side job.
As an EU student, you are only covered for a temporary stay in the Netherlands by the health insurance scheme in your home country.
This is called EHIC. The duration differs from country to country, sometimes adding up to only a couple of months. Please check this before you come over to the Netherlands. European health insurance schemes can differ and may not always meet your expectations. Therefore, we strongly advise you to top off your coverage by taking out an additional student insurance policy.
If you work alongside your studies or are doing a paid placement, you must apply for Dutch public health insurance. There are many different types of Dutch health insurance for students available, and most of the time, your employer can help you find which one suits your situation best.
It’s good to know that you can also apply for a healthcare allowance. We call it zorgtoeslag. It will cover most of your insurance costs.
If you do not have a side job, non-EU students, as well as EU students, need to apply for a student insurance policy. There are various levels of coverage available in different price ranges. Some added advantages of this policy include personal liability, household contents, insurance theft, repatriation and legal advice.
