A király elkergette otthonról gyermekeit, mert nem találtak maguknak menyasszonyt illetve vőlegényt a saját országukban. Addig vándorolnak, míg egy csodálatos erejű fához érnek. A fa leveleivel, meg az életvízzel, amit a fa melletti patakból merítenek, meggyógyítják a szomszéd országbéli beteg királyfit, akiben a királylány megtalálja élete párját. A királyfi tovább vándorol, és egy titokzatos kovácsmester segítségével – egy aranybornyúban elrejtőzve – meglesi az eladósorban lévő…
