As Paul Francis Webster once so wisely wrote, love is a many splendoured thing. It is a powerful, incorruptible and infallible emotion that can govern the way we lead the rest of our lives and while there are some out there who never experience true love, those of us who have know full well just how vital it is to our very existence.
Cinema like no other medium has provided us with some of the most iconic and most memorable portrayals of love – from Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr passionately embracing each other on the beach to a cocker spaniel and a mongrel sharing spaghetti at the back of an Italian restaurant. These scenes are firmly embedded into our public consciousness and while there are some stone-hearted detractors out there, there is no doubt that movies about love, passion and romance make us appreciate those we have chosen to spend our lives with that little bit more.
To honour this day of flowers, cards, chocolates and spending far too much money on every heart-shaped accessory you can find, here is my personal countdown of the 10 most romantic movies ever made.
