Online Education

Principles, secrets and tips of online and offline distance education (A. Cannelli)

What should primary and secondary education teachers heed to maximize results when becoming involved in distance education, in either the synchronous or the asynchronous mode? In this interview (the second of a total of three), Alessandra Cannelli, a Rome-based ICT expert and teacher trainer, presents her “golden rules”:

• Try to use what you feel comfortable with, don’t overdo it
• Be part of groups or blogs that may sustain you and provide suggestions (for example FB group “Digital Skills-European Schoolnet Academy”
• Better record your video than stream: students can watch it when it is possible for them
• If you meet your students online use https://www.mentimeter.com or https://answergarden.ch to have feedback and make them feel involved
• Always show your face: it is more motivating and personal. Emphasize social-emotional learning
• Keep it Short and Simple: videos or texts that are too long will not be completed
• Create interactive activities using tools such as quizlet or kahoot to enhance self-paced learning
• Ask your students to create digital content (videos, audios or texts)
• Use platforms such as Edmodo to interact with your students
• eTwinning platform allows projects among members of the same school for this coronavirus time
• Don’t grade but Encourage
