Wefi Surfboards/The Canadian Surfer Movie/Randy Weflen

Wefi is a West-Coast board builder featuring custom hollow western red cedar boards. Our fully-custom air-chambered boards are an entirely different type of ride.Constructed from natural elements found on the West Coast of Vancouver Island, our boards provide a melding medium that unite the rider with the energy of the wave.

Seductive in appearance and smooth in feel, Wefi surfboards are built to ride Wefi boards are built with wood.. No foam, no veneers.. All Wefi boards are constructed with an internal frame that has been designed through a computer. The wood we use to wrap these frames with is Western Red Cedar, a wood that is grown and harvested locally in our region.
We dry our own cedars in a controlled environment resulting with the lightest material possible. First planking the bottom of the board, we then create a hollow rail system on the surfboard by using an old technique used in kayak and canoe construction. Finished off with the top planking, the board is hand shaped with a number of different hand planes and then finally sanded.

Wefi surfboards treats all the interiors of their surfboards with a penetrating resin to ensure interior protection incase there is any accidental leaking through a forgotten vent plug before surfing. Finished off with a 4oz. Fibre glass and epoxy system, the boards are carefully inspected with a pressure testing system to ensure they are 100% water tight.
The finish used on a Wefi surfboard can be one of 2 things. Polished epoxy gloss coat, or a 2 part UV spray coating. We have found that even though epoxy doesn’t have much protection against UV , the exposure these boards get haven’t shown any ambering or deterring over 5 years. Being a marine epoxy system there is a bit of UV protection in the resins. Our 2 part UV clear coat protection does cost a bit extra, but ensures a very hard finish with a high gloss shine.

Because of there construction, you don’t get the heel dents, pressure dings and stress cracks.. In fact if you look at the life expectancy of a cedar planked canoe or kayak, the results with these boards would be very much similar allowing these boards to last for many years.
